Voiced / Unvoiced

Voiced / Unvoiced is a 12 minute performance that investigates identity formation and the role of the body in digital space. The piece grapples with how the body — particularly the female body — is silenced and how it speaks. The piece uses a motion tracking camera and custom software the map video onto the performer’s body. The soundscape is also controlled by the performer’s movements.

Voiced / Unvoiced has been performed at the Brown University’s Granoff Center for the Creative Arts (Providence, RI), the University of Buffalo (Buffalo, NY); Watermans Center (London, UK), and Webmedia 2014 (Joao Pessoa, Brazil). The piece was also reworked for inclusion in Ghost Theater, a video collaboration with film director Jay Craven and composer Robert Paterson, commissioned by the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) in Troy, NY. Ghost Theater premiered at EMAPC in 2013 with the score performed live by the Albany Symphony Orchestra’s “Dogs of Desire.”
