On Collage

My collages are an extension of my performance practice: I collage imagery from my performances, and then I draw on top of these collages while watching video of my rehearsals, my hand tracing the movement of a head, a torso, a pair of legs, etc. I iterate through this process of drawing and dancing as I develop each performance. The resulting works on paper both document the process of developing the performance and stand alone as visual investigations into the same central concepts of gender and identity. I am practicing letting go of how we are “supposed” to be. I am practicing holding all parts of myself. I am practicing growing flowers, spilling ice cream, screaming, showing up imperfect in glitter and tulle and a men’s blazer with one red latex opera glove. I am practicing queerness. I am inviting us to rethink the familiar.
