#buynow is an interactive video installation commissioned by Illuminus for their 2019 projection festival in Boston’s Financial District. Viewers immerse themselves in the luscious world of an imaginary Instagram influencer, flying through opulent baroque palaces, and dissolving in a glitchy post-apocalyptic industrial-chic landscape. Traces of colonialism and capitalism shimmer just beneath the surface of these playful encounters. By combining real-time video of viewers with this beautiful but uncanny imagery, the installation invites viewers to question their engagement with media messages and the norms these messages reinforce.
